Sand Hollow State Park and the Sand Mountain dunes are two of the busiest UTV destinations in the West. We insure hundreds of RZRs, Mavericks, Talons, and Wildcats out of St. George, Hurricane, and Washington — and every season we get calls from owners who assumed their homeowners or auto policy would cover a rollover at the dunes. It usually doesn't.
Why homeowners almost always denies
HO-3 policies exclude motorized vehicles designed for off-road use once they leave the insured premises. The moment your RZR is on a trailer headed to Sand Hollow, the homeowners policy is out. Some carriers offer a small recreational vehicle endorsement, but the limits and liability are usually too low to matter in a real claim.
What a proper UTV policy looks like
- Liability: at least $100,000/$300,000. UTV rollovers with passengers generate real bodily injury claims.
- Collision & comprehensive: agreed value on anything newer than five years. RZR Pro R Ultimates and Maverick R's run $40K+ — depreciation arguments after a rollover get ugly fast.
- Medical payments: $5,000–$10,000. Pays regardless of fault and helps with the ER bill from Dixie Regional.
- Uninsured motorist: Utah doesn't require off-road vehicle insurance. Most riders at Sand Hollow carry nothing. Protect yourself.
- Custom parts & equipment: roof, doors, audio, light bars, winches, suspension. Schedule the dollar amount or you'll be capped at $1,500 default.
Trailer, ramps, and gear
The enclosed trailer, the loading ramps, helmets, harnesses, GPS, and comms gear are typically separate items. We add trailer coverage and a small inland marine schedule for the gear — usually a few dollars a month each.
Renting your UTV out?
Renting your machine through a peer-to-peer platform or local rental fleet voids almost every standard policy. If you rent out a UTV — even occasionally — you need a commercial powersports policy. We write them.
Don't forget the umbrella
A personal umbrella ($1M–$5M) is one of the cheapest and most important pieces of the puzzle for any household with UTVs, boats, or teenage drivers. Make sure the umbrella specifically schedules the recreational vehicles below it — not all do automatically.
If you're heading to the dunes this weekend or you just picked up a new RZR from one of the St. George dealers, request a UTV quote before the next ride.
