UTV & Side-by-Side Insurance at Sand Hollow and Sand Mountain

RZRs, Mavericks, and Talons at Sand Hollow and Sand Mountain need a real UTV policy — not just a homeowners endorsement. Here's how to structure coverage for Southern Utah dune and trail riders.

Sand Hollow State Park and the Sand Mountain dunes are two of the busiest UTV destinations in the West. We insure hundreds of RZRs, Mavericks, Talons, and Wildcats out of St. George, Hurricane, and Washington — and every season we get calls from owners who assumed their homeowners or auto policy would cover a rollover at the dunes. It usually doesn't.

Why your homeowners policy won't help

Homeowners insurance is built around your dwelling and personal property — not motorized machines. Nearly every HO-3 policy excludes liability and physical damage for ATVs, UTVs, and side-by-sides outright, regardless of whether the machine is in your garage, on your driveway, or already loaded for Sand Hollow. The carrier treats them as motor vehicles that need their own policy. Even the rare carrier that offers a recreational-vehicle endorsement on a home policy usually caps it at a few thousand dollars — nowhere near enough to replace a stolen RZR or cover a guest's injury. If you own a side-by-side, you need a dedicated powersports policy. Homeowners won't step in.

Quads, side-by-sides, and sport ATVs all need their own powersports policy — homeowners and auto won't fill the gap.

What a proper UTV policy looks like

  • Liability: set limits that match what you carry on your auto policy (and your household assets). UTV rollovers with passengers generate real bodily injury claims, so don't default to the minimum — but the right number is a conversation, not a one-size-fits-all rule.
  • Collision & comprehensive: agreed value on anything newer than five years. RZR Pro R Ultimates and Maverick R's run $40K+ — depreciation arguments after a rollover get ugly fast.
  • Medical payments: $5,000–$10,000. Pays regardless of fault and helps with the ER bill from Dixie Regional.
  • Uninsured / underinsured motorist: Utah doesn't require off-road vehicle insurance, and a lot of riders at Sand Hollow carry nothing. UM/UIM protects you when the other rider can't.
  • Custom parts & equipment: roof, doors, audio, light bars, winches, suspension. Schedule the dollar amount or you'll be capped at the default $1,500.

Trailer, ramps, and gear

The enclosed trailer, the loading ramps, helmets, harnesses, GPS, and comms gear are typically separate items. We add trailer coverage and a small inland marine schedule for the gear — usually a few dollars a month each.

Comprehensive coverage matters as much as collision — theft, fire, and rolling damage off the trailer are all common.

Renting your UTV out?

Renting your machine through a peer-to-peer platform or local rental fleet voids almost every standard personal policy. If you rent out a UTV — even occasionally — you need a commercial powersports policy. We don't write commercial UTV-rental policies in-house, but we can point you to the specialty markets that do.

Don't forget the umbrella

A personal umbrella ($1M–$5M) is one of the cheapest and most important pieces of the puzzle for any household with UTVs, boats, or teenage drivers. Make sure the umbrella specifically schedules the recreational vehicles below it — not all do automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Utah auto policy cover my side-by-side at Sand Hollow?

No. Auto policies cover licensed road vehicles. A UTV — even a street-legal one — needs its own powersports / off-road policy for trail and dune use.

Is UTV insurance required to ride at Sand Hollow State Park?

Utah does not require insurance on off-road-only UTVs, but Sand Hollow State Park requires a valid OHV registration and decal. Street-legal UTVs operated on Hurricane and Washington County roads do need liability coverage.

How much does a UTV policy cost in Southern Utah?

Most stock RZRs, Mavericks, and Talons run roughly $280–$650/year for full coverage in Washington and Iron counties. Built machines run more. See our 2026 Utah UTV insurance cost guide for sample quotes.
