The OnPoint approach

What you actually need to know about motorcycle coverage

Utah requires the same 30/65/25 liability minimum for motorcycles as it does for cars — but those limits go even less far on a bike, where a serious accident is far more likely to involve significant medical claims. Whether you ride in St. George, Cedar City, Provo, Salt Lake City, Ogden, Park City, or Logan, we recommend higher liability, robust medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverage as a baseline.

Aftermarket parts are the easiest place for Utah riders to get under-insured. Standard policies cap custom-parts coverage at $1,000–$3,000. If you've added pipes, a paint job, custom bags, or a stereo, that's blown through in a single hailstorm. We schedule the actual value of your modifications so you're paid out for what they're really worth.

Most carriers in Utah offer a lay-up or seasonal endorsement for riders who park the bike during winter — particularly useful along the Wasatch Front and in northern Utah where the riding season is shorter. Comp coverage stays in force to protect against theft or weather damage, but liability and collision can drop, which is meaningful savings if you're a fair-weather rider.

Deeper into motorcycle coverage

The Southern Utah details that change which policy fits

Southern Utah is one of the best riding regions in the country and one of the most demanding to insure correctly. Snow Canyon, the Twist of the Dragon, the Kolob Terrace loop, and the run out to Pine Valley pull riders from across the West, and they also concentrate exactly the kind of sweeping high-speed corners where a single mistake means a serious medical claim. Utah's 30/65/25 minimum liability is wildly inadequate for that profile — we walk every rider through what real medical and lost-wage exposure looks like before we even quote.

Aftermarket gear is where most riders get quietly underinsured. A Vance & Hines exhaust system, a custom paint job, hard bags, a quality helmet ($600–$1,200), a stereo, a frame slider, and a touring windshield can stack to $5K–$10K of value on top of a stock bike. Standard custom-parts coverage caps at $1K–$3K. A single comp claim after a hailstorm in Washington Fields can blow through that base limit and leave you eating the difference. We schedule modifications explicitly so the agreed value matches what you've actually invested.

Lay-up coverage is a Southern Utah favorite. Most of our clients ride 8–9 months a year and park the bike from late December through February. We can structure the policy so liability and collision drop during the off-season while comprehensive (theft, fire, weather) stays in force — typically a 15–25% annual savings. We re-activate full coverage automatically each spring without a gap, so you're not exposed on the first warm-day ride.

Touring riders heading to Bryce, Capitol Reef, Yellowstone, or beyond need to understand carrier-by-carrier coverage territory. Most carriers cover the entire continental US and Canada, but a few have surprising exclusions or sub-limits for Mexico, Alaska, or extended trips over 30 days. If you're a serious touring rider, this matters. We pre-screen carriers for the rides you actually do before binding.

PIP and uninsured motorist coverage are the two pieces motorcyclists most often skip and most often need. PIP pays your own medical bills regardless of fault and doesn't require you to fight with a health insurance deductible. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage pays you when the driver who hit you doesn't have enough coverage — which is appallingly common on I-15 around St. George. We treat both as non-negotiable on every motorcycle policy we write.

Real Southern Utah claims

Scenarios we've actually handled

Hailstorm in Washington Fields

A summer storm dropped golf-ball-sized hail across Washington Fields one July afternoon. A client's bike took $4,800 in damage to the tank, fairings, and aftermarket exhaust. Because we'd scheduled the custom exhaust and paint at $3,200, the claim paid out the full repair — instead of being capped at a $1,000 base custom-parts limit and leaving the client $3,800 short.

Deer strike on Highway 18

A rider on the Snow Canyon Parkway loop hit a deer at dusk and went down. Bike was totaled. Medical bills exceeded $80K. The 100/300 liability and $25K PIP we'd written meant medical was handled immediately without a fight with health insurance, and the agreed-value totaled-bike payout funded a replacement within a month.

Uninsured driver on I-15

A St. George client was rear-ended on I-15 by an uninsured driver. Injuries were significant. The client's own underinsured-motorist coverage paid out the full $100K limit while the at-fault driver went into collections. Without UM/UIM, the entire claim would have been a years-long lawsuit against someone with no money.
