Quick Answer

Garfield County households enroll in ACA coverage through HealthCare.gov, with the 2027 window open November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. SelectHealth and Molina are the two on-exchange carriers. Because Panguitch and Escalante sit hours apart, plan choice here turns on transport, telehealth and pharmacy access.

A December 15, 2026 application starts coverage January 1; anything filed after that waits until February 1. Garfield Memorial Hospital in Panguitch is the county's only hospital, and east-side towns like Escalante and Boulder are 60 to 100 miles from it over roads that snow closes. Most subsidized households land between $50 and $350 a month once the credit applies. Dial (435) 628-0993 and we will price it with you at no cost.

Garfield County, Utah

What makes Garfield County coverage different

Garfield is the fifth-largest county in Utah by land and one of the smallest by population. Panguitch sits on US-89 in the west, Escalante and Boulder sit on SR-12 in the east, and between them lie Bryce Canyon, the Aquarius Plateau, and a lot of empty road. Two households in the same county can have completely different care realities, which is why we never quote a Garfield plan without asking which side of the plateau you live on.

Winter is the second variable. SR-12 over Boulder Mountain climbs above 9,000 feet and storms can make the drive to Panguitch or Richfield an all-day proposition. Households in Boulder and Escalante should weigh a plan's virtual-care depth and its 90-day pharmacy fills the way a Salt Lake buyer weighs a copay, because in January those benefits are the difference between getting care and postponing it.

Income here is heavily park-driven. Bryce Canyon lodging, guiding, Forest Service and National Park Service seasonal appointments, and ranching all deliver money in bursts. We help Garfield households build an annualized 2027 income projection instead of extrapolating a July paycheck across twelve months, which is the single most common reason a rural subsidy comes out wrong.

What actually decides a Garfield County plan

One hospital, two ends of a county

Garfield Memorial Hospital in Panguitch is the only hospital in the county. Escalante and Boulder residents are 60 to 100 miles out, so we treat drive time as a benefit comparison, not a footnote.

Winter road closures on SR-12

Boulder Mountain and the Hogsback can shut down for days. Plans with round-the-clock virtual visits and generous mail-order refills consistently outperform a cheaper premium in this county.

Park and Forest Service seasonal pay

Bryce Canyon lodging, guiding, NPS and USFS seasonal appointments pay in bursts. Annualizing that income correctly is where most Garfield applications gain or lose their credit.

Referrals leave the county

Specialty care generally means Cedar City, Richfield, or St. George. We check each referral hospital against SelectHealth and Molina before you commit to a network.

Panguitch's hospital is the county's only one, and Escalante and Boulder sit 60 to 100 miles from its door.

When SR-12 closes over the plateau, virtual visits and 90-day mail-order refills stop being extras.

Two carriers sell on the exchange here: SelectHealth and Molina Healthcare of Utah. Garfield Memorial Hospital is an Intermountain facility, which usually puts SelectHealth ahead on network, though Molina's after-credit price can be lower. If your income clears the subsidy range we also write Start Health and Allstate Health Solutions off-exchange.
Plan for it at enrollment rather than in a storm. We look at each plan's 24/7 virtual visit access, whether urgent care outside the network is covered at a reasonable share, and whether the pharmacy benefit supports 90-day mail fills. Those three items do more for an east-side Garfield household than a $20 premium difference.
HealthCare.gov opens November 1, 2026 and closes January 15, 2027. File by December 15 for a January 1 effective date; later applications begin February 1. After January 15 you need a qualifying event — losing employer coverage, a move, marriage, divorce, or a new child — to enroll.
